How to load a moving truck
Load a moving truck heaviest first, low and against the front wall nearest the cab, with long pieces on edge along the sides. Appliances, dressers and heavy boxes go in first, then mattresses and tables, then lighter boxes on top. Build tight tiers from floor to ceiling, strap each tier to the wall rails, and fill gaps with soft items so nothing shifts. Keep the load balanced side to side.

Mark it once you can do it without this page open.
How to do it
- Stage everything near the truck, grouped as heavy, long, boxes and fragile.
- Use the loading ramp and a dolly, and never step off the side of the ramp.
- Put the heaviest items against the front wall, low and balanced from side to side.
- Stand mattresses, sofas and tabletops on edge along the side walls.
- Stack boxes heaviest at the bottom, lightest at the top, in tight tiers to the ceiling.
- Strap each finished tier to the wall rails with ratchet straps or rope.
- Fill gaps with pillows, bags of clothes and blankets so nothing can slide.
- Load fragile boxes last so they come off first.
Stop and call a professional if
- You have never driven a truck that size or cannot see behind it clearly: hire movers or a driver rather than learning on moving day.
- The load includes a piano, a safe or appliances you cannot move safely on a dolly: hire professional movers.
Common mistakes
- Putting heavy items at the back by the door, which makes the truck handle badly.
- Leaving gaps that let a whole stack fall on the first corner.
- Riding in the back of the truck, which is unsafe and illegal in many places.
