How to parallel park
To parallel park, stop two feet out beside the car ahead of the space with rear bumpers level, then reverse slowly with the wheel turned fully toward the curb. When your car sits at about 45 degrees, straighten the wheel, keep reversing, and turn fully away from the curb to swing the front in. Practice with cones or empty spaces first.

How to do it
- Check the space is at least one and a half car lengths long and signal toward it.
- Stop beside the car in front of the space, about two feet away, with your rear bumper level with its rear bumper.
- Check mirrors and over your shoulder, then reverse slowly while turning the steering wheel fully toward the curb.
- When the car is at roughly 45 degrees to the curb, or you can see the car behind in your curbside mirror, straighten the wheel.
- Keep reversing straight until your front bumper clears the rear of the car in front.
- Turn the wheel fully away from the curb and keep reversing slowly so the front swings in.
- Stop before you touch the car behind, straighten the wheels, and pull forward to center in the space.
- Aim to finish within about a foot of the curb, then check the gap before you open your door.
Common mistakes
- Starting too close to the parked car, so your front corner clips it.
- Reversing too fast to make small corrections.
- Turning the wheel while stationary, which wears the tires and steering.
- Forgetting to look over your shoulder for cyclists and pedestrians.
