How to do it

  1. Shave after a warm shower or hold a warm, wet cloth on your face for two minutes.
  2. Work a shaving cream or gel into the beard area with your fingers or a brush.
  3. Feel which way the hair grows in each area; it often changes direction on the neck.
  4. Shave with the grain in short strokes, letting the razor's weight do the work.
  5. Rinse the blade after every few strokes.
  6. Reapply lather for a second pass across the grain if you want closer; skip going against the grain if you get bumps.
  7. Rinse with cool water, pat dry, and apply an unscented moisturizer.
  8. Change the blade or cartridge as soon as it tugs.

Stop and call a professional if

  • Red, painful bumps keep coming back or become infected: see a doctor or a skin specialist.
  • A mole or spot bleeds, grows or changes when you shave around it: get it checked.

Common mistakes

  • Dry shaving or using only soap.
  • Pressing hard to get closer.
  • Using a dull blade for weeks.
  • Picking at ingrown hairs.

Quick self-check

Three questions. Your last score is kept in this browser.

1. Which direction should the first pass go?
2. What causes more razor burn?
3. Bumps keep returning and look infected. What should you do?
