Mark it once you can do it without this page open.

How to do it

  1. Run a speed test on a device right next to the router and write down the result.
  2. Unplug the modem and the router, wait thirty seconds, plug in the modem, and wait until its lights settle.
  3. Plug the router back in and test again after two minutes.
  4. Plug a computer into the router with a network cable and test once more.
  5. Move the router to a central, raised spot away from metal cabinets, fish tanks and microwaves.
  6. Disconnect devices you do not use and pause large downloads or backups while you test.
  7. Call the provider if the wired speed is still well below your plan, with your test times and results in hand.

Common mistakes

  • Testing from the far bedroom and blaming the provider.
  • Restarting the router but not the modem, or both at once.
  • Hiding the router in a closet or behind the TV.

Quick self-check

Three questions. Your last score is kept in this browser.

1. Which order should you restart the equipment in?
2. A cabled computer gets full speed but the wireless is slow. Where is the problem?
3. What should you have ready when you call the provider?
