How to do it

  1. Read the job posting twice and underline the skills it asks for most.
  2. Look up the company: what it does, who its customers are, and any recent news.
  3. Prepare three stories, each under two minutes: the situation, what you did, and how it turned out.
  4. Practice answering tell me about yourself in under a minute, ending with why this job.
  5. Write three questions for them, such as what does a great first three months look like in this role.
  6. Plan your clothes the night before, one step dressier than the staff wear, and check the route.
  7. Arrive ten minutes early, with copies of your resume and a pen.
  8. Send a short thank-you email the same day, naming one thing you discussed.

Common mistakes

  • Knowing nothing about the company when asked why you want to work there.
  • Rambling for five minutes on a simple question.
  • Criticizing a past employer.
  • Having no questions at the end.

Quick self-check

Three questions. Your last score is kept in this browser.

1. How long should each prepared story run?
2. The interviewer asks if you have questions. What do you do?
3. How do you talk about a difficult former boss?
