How to use a pressure washer safely
To use a pressure washer safely, start with the widest spray nozzle, hold the wand two to three feet away, and test on a hidden spot before you work closer. Never point it at people, pets or your own feet, keep it away from windows and outlets, and run gas models outdoors only. The spray can cut skin, so treat it like a blade.

Mark it once you can do it without this page open.
How to do it
- Read the machine's manual, and wear eye protection, long pants and closed shoes.
- Connect the garden hose and turn the water fully on before starting the machine, so the pump is never run dry.
- Fit the widest-angle nozzle first and start the machine outdoors, away from doors and windows if it is gas powered.
- Hold the wand with both hands, aim at the ground, and squeeze the trigger to feel the kickback.
- Test on a hidden spot from two to three feet away, and move closer only if the surface can take it.
- Work in overlapping strokes, keeping the tip moving and at the same distance.
- Keep the spray away from people, pets, plants you want to keep, windows, vents, outlets and light fittings.
- Release the trigger, switch off and squeeze the trigger again to release pressure before changing nozzles.
Stop and call a professional if
- The spray hits skin and breaks it, even if the wound looks small: get medical care the same day, as injected water and dirt can cause serious infection.
- The surface is a roof, a second story or old paint that may contain lead.
- The machine leaks fuel, the hose is damaged or the trigger lock fails.
Common mistakes
- Using the narrowest nozzle to go faster and gouging wood or concrete.
- Spraying from a ladder, where the kickback can push you off.
- Pointing the wand at a foot or hand to rinse it.
- Running a gas unit in a garage or shed.
