Mark it once you can do it without this page open.

How to do it

  1. Notice your automatic yes and pause before answering.
  2. Buy time: let me check my week and get back to you tonight.
  3. Decide based on your time, energy and priorities, not guilt.
  4. Say no clearly and kindly: I cannot cover Saturday this time.
  5. Keep any reason short, or give none; long excuses invite negotiation.
  6. Offer an alternative only if you truly want to: I could do two hours Sunday afternoon.
  7. If pushed, repeat the same answer calmly without adding new reasons.

Common mistakes

  • Saying maybe when you mean no, which leaves people waiting.
  • Over-explaining with a list of excuses.
  • Saying yes and then resenting it or backing out late.
  • Apologizing for having limits.

Quick self-check

Three questions. Your last score is kept in this browser.

1. What is a good first reply to a request you are unsure about?
2. Why keep the reason short?
3. They push back. What do you do?
